Dr Smith qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1994 from the Unversity of Otago, Dunedin. She holds both a doctorate in psychology and a post graduate diploma in clinical psychology.

Following graduation Dr Smith worked in private practice and was involved in counsellor training. She has been a specialist report writer and expert witness for the Family Court since 1996. Whilst continuing to offer therapeutic services across the years, Dr Smith has also worked in a range of management and consultancy positions and has published a number of papers.

In more recent years Dr Smith has extended her interest in short and long term therapeutic work and has completed further study in this area. She is an accredited Cognitive Analytic Therapy practitioner and supervisor, as well as continuing to offer cognitive behavioural therapy.  Dr Smith is accredited to work with clients for ACC.

Dr Smith is in the process of relocating from Auckland to Central Otago.  She will be available for telehealth consultations country-wide from 01 February 2021.  From March face-to-face consultations will be available in the Central Otago area.
